PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION: Obtained postdoctoral experience at Hannover University and Okayama University with Ph.D. in Agricultural Science (Dr. agr.) from University of Giessen, Germany; earlier obtained MSc. Agriculture and BSc. Agriculture both of the University of Nairobi, Kenya
APPOINTMENTS: Since 2013, Prof Agong is the Vice-Chancellor, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga university of Science and Technology and Professor of Horticulture. Earlier in professional carrier, he held various academic and administrative positions at JKUAT, African Academy of Sciences, Maseno University and former Bondo University College
PUBLICATIONS: Prof Stephen G Agong has over sixty publications in peer-reviewed journals and books.
SYNERGISTIC ACTIVITIES: Prof Agong is scholar and an educator of over 30 years of university teaching, research and community outreach. He has been described as a net-worker par excellence by my former sponsor, DAAD (http://www.daad.de/alumni/en/adm/adm_2005 _05.html). He is a committed university teacher, researcher and trainer who maintains and cultivates international contacts.
COLLABORATORS & OTHER AFFILIATIONS: Prof Agong’ enjoys collaboration with colleagues across the globe with colleagues from Universities such as Brown University, USA, UCT and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (South Africa); Chalmers (Sweden) and Hannover University (Germany).
CURRENT RESEARCH FOCUS:
i. Germplasm development in vegetable crops with reference to tomatoes and indigenous vegetable;
ii. Low external-input horticulture, environment friendly and sustainable agriculture (bio-fertilizer generation from urban waste; optimization of agronomic practices in spider plant, low input systems for French beans and Tomato, abiotic stress),
iii. Agricultural-bio-diversity in various vegetable crops; Ecological-physiological adaptation studies in vegetable crops under equatorial region; Ecological and nutritive potential of African indigenous vegetables; Urban agriculture and food security in the realization of sustainable socio-economic urban development.
