OVERVIEW:
Description of the Programme:

The programme will contribute towards the realization of community health at the grassroots level. It targets health personnel who would like to acquire more knowledge amongst others interested in community health. Graduates from the program could be absorbed by health-based NGOs, research institutions, health facilities and government ministries among others. The curriculum has been prepared in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO) target for ensuring affordable quality and easily accessible health services for all developing countries where a high percentage of population live below the poverty line.

Admission Requirements:

a)Candidates must satisfy the minimum university entry requirements of KCSE Mean Grade of C+ (Plus) with C+(Plain) in Biology/ Biological Sciences and Chemistry, C (Plain) in Mathematics or Physics and C (Plain) in English or Kiswahili. OR

b) Holders of KACE with minimum of 2 principals passes and one subsidiary pass at A-level. OR

c) KCSE Mean Grade C- (Minus) with a KNEC Diploma of at least Credit Pass. OR

d) Diploma from accredited Institution.

Programme Learning Objectives (PLOs):

The general objective is to prepare students with a strong scientific foundation for continuation into advanced degrees as well as a grasp on community engagement.

At the end of this program, students should be able to:

a) Apply the necessary skills as community health professionals for local and international careers as managers and policy makers.

b) Develop skills in scientific research and writing that will enable them to work together with biomedical teams

c) Demonstrate competence through supported practice in addressing issues in community health and development (e.g., substance abuse, prevention of chronic diseases)



STRUCTURE OF PROGRAMME:
Duration of the Program:

a) The degree shall normally take four academic years of 8 semesters.

b) Students shall be required to undertake industrial attachment after the 2nd semester of the third year of study.

EXPECTED CAREER DIRECTIONS:

Graduates can work as community health workers, program coordinators, community development officers, or health educators.
